Bellingham retians British title with third round stoppage of Thomas

Queensbury Boxing League - Bellingham retians British title with third round stoppage of Thomas

The league's only current British champion Alex Bellingham retained his title with a third round stoppage of ex-pro Saquib Thomas on the 'True Grit' bill.

Bellingham made a positive start to the opening round as he probed the jab out keeping the range from his smaller opponent and the champion landed a sharp right hand to close the round.

In the second round Bellingham found success to the body as he pierced out a succession of sharp straight rights to the body but the champion found home to a telling left-hook before landing an uppercut-hook combination as he applied the pressure.

Bellingham continued the straight shots down the middle in the third, the champion landed with a left-hook to the body and upstairs before finding home to a handful of spiteful one-two's.

Although Thomas survived the round the challenger retired after the third session citing an injury to his hand, as Bellingham picked up a stoppage victory.

"It was difficult to land completely flush but I felt I started breaking him down before he retired," said Bellingham.

"I feel I performed well considering he was meant to be my toughest test but he came into the fight quite negative to be fair.

"Firstly I was over the moon when I saw the ref wave the fight off but when he said he injured his hand I thought he robbed me of a career best finish but all dues to Queensbury for continuing to find me these tests."

The undefeated Bellingham cited he believes he is one the best welterweights the league has seen and questioned who could be next to challenge for his title.

"I’m weighing up my options, if some big names get thrown at me how can I turn them down?" he said.

"I’ve beaten everyone at welterweight the only person I haven’t boxed is John Martin but to be honest I just want to keep moving onwards and upwards not move back down to a level I dominated at.

"To be fair I feel I’m one of the best welterweights Queensbury seen."
