After announcing his arrival in the league back in November with a thrilling third round stoppage victory over Andy Thompson in a candidate for fight of the night, Northampton's Danny Lineham returns to action on Saturday March 16th when he locks horns with established league star Sam Holloway in what many are already predicting will be the fight of the night. The league caught up with Lineham ahead of his English Middleweight title showdown to chat, tactics, training and what he thinks it will take to hand Holloway his first defeat in the league.
QBL: Thanks for taking time out to chat to us about your massive upcoming title showdown.
Danny Lineham: Thank you for giving me another opportunity to showcase on the Queensbury Boxing League
QBL: Your debut in the league back in November was an exciting fight that caught the attention of many of the league's fans both live at the show, and on Eurosport after being selected by the channel to be shown on the league's end of season finale, talk us through how you remember the fight, and were you pleased with your performance.
Danny Lineham: I remember the fight well as I've watched it back around 20 times! it was fast paced and that's exactly how we expected it to be. Its no secret the fighters coming out of O'niells boxing gym will be in peak condition so we were prepared for non stop action.I feel I was in control through out the whole fight, even whilst fighting on the back foot, but I knew I was never out of danger until the stoppage came. I was happy with the performance because I showed that i'm not just a scrapper but I know I still have more to give in terms of boxing.
QBL: Next up for you is a crack at the vacant Queensbury English Middleweight title in a fight that has already attracted massive attention amongst the league's fans. What do you know about the man contesting the title with you, and will this be your toughest test so far?
Danny Lineham: I think this has attracted attention because myself and Sam Holloway are exciting fighters, its that simple. I realise that I will have came over all cocky in my post fight interview after the Thompson fight but ultimately I believe people want to see me fight because I'm exciting to watch and not because I gobbed off! There'll be the people out there that want me to lose but I always respect my haters, they're the only ones that believe you're doing better than them. As for what I know of Sam Holloway, he's a very durable, dangerous power puncher. He's proven himself at English title level before by claiming the title at Super Middleweight. He's also undefeated, so could the task be any harder?!?! I would say yes to him being my toughest opponent to date, most definitely.
QBL: With just over 8 weeks to go until fight night, talk us through your preparations for this fight and will you be doing anything differently from your last training camp?
Danny Lineham: My preparations will be the same as they always are for a fight because it hasn't let me down yet. With out giving to much away, it'll be lots of running and lots of gym time! My coaches will obviously tweak bits here and there depending on my opponent. I just listen to my coaches and try to do as they ask to the best of my ability. I live clean for 8 weeks before a fight, so I'll be leaving the cheeseburgers well alone until after fight night!!
QBL: As you mentioned earlier, Holloway is known for his punching power and after your last performance its clear you also carry a significant dig, do you think you have the power to stop this fight, and how do you think this fight is going to go.
Danny Lineham: I believe we are very evenly matched, and with that we both have the power to stop the fight at any time. I'm sure Sam is confident of doing it, just as I am! We'd be in the wrong game if we didn't believe in ourselves! As for how the fight goes? I'm just preparing for a very tough, draining and brutal 5 rounds.
QBL: You train out of the Felix Fighting Sysytems gym in Northampton who have a great stable of fighters, what does a typical week of training consist of for you there, and why does the gym produce so many good boxers?
Danny Lineham: The father and son team that run the gym, Curtis and Dom, know their stuff! . Obviously there's natural talent in people but its ultimately down to the coaches to get that out of you. The thing I like about our gym is there's no blue print. Curtis and Dom will allow you freedom to express yourself with you own style but at the same time they will keep the reigns on you by always insisting you use the basic skills that any boxer should. As for the training, its four times a week in the gym and its a surprise to what you'll be doing! Whether its a heavy sparring session, technical sparring, deadly circuit or pad drills. We never know until we turn up!!
QBL: And finally when that first bell sounds on March 16th what can the league's fans expect to see from Danny "Dynamite" Lineham?
Danny Lineham: I'm a man that will put it all on the line. What more can I say?!
QBL: Thanks or taking time out to chat, and we look forward to seeing you in action on the 16th
Danny Lineham: I can't wait for it! Thank you.
