Queensbury pro Welterweight Gareth Gardner says he is ready for a much sterner test in his next professional outing, when the Croydon crowd pleaser enters the ring for his second professional start.
Gardner, 31 from New Addington in Surrey made an impressive start to his pro career in the new Queensbury professional ranks back in June by beating veteran Marty Kayes over 4 rounds, a win that looks even more impressive after the Northern Irishman captured a WBU regional belt in a shock win in his very next fight.
And with his sights firmly set on a fast tracked rise in the division starting with his first six rounder on September 24th at the famous Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey, the former Queensbury Boxing League standout is already back in the gym training hard in preparation for another big night.
“ It was great to get the first pro fight out of the way, and looking back at my performance I felt really good down at Welterweight and could have gone a few more rounds, said Gardner.
“ Kayes was a good strong opponent who was there to fight, and he’s gone on to win the WBU belt in his next fight which looks even better for me”
“ Since the Kayes fight I’ve taken a few weeks off from the gym to relax but I’m already back in the gym now working towards the next one, and for the fight in September I’m looking at competing against the next level of opponent and someone that is going to really push me"
Gardner was originally scheduled to collide with Pole Sylwester Walczak on his maiden bout until Walczak withdrew from the showdown due to family issue in his native Poland, but even with the possibility of that fight being rescheduled for September, Gardner feels he wants more of a test.
“ There is the possibility of facing Walczak in September but to be honest I want more of a test for this one”
“ I’m looking at pushing forward, and throughout my league career I fought tough opposition and I want that to continue in the pro ranks”
“ The transition to 4 x 3 rounds really suited me and I felt comfortable at the new lower weight, so now my focus is all on putting in the work in the gym over the next couple of months and putting on another good performance”
Gardner will headline the stacked All Guns Blazing promotion taking place on Saturday September 24th in the Oaks arena at the Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey.
