Golden Gloves ready for True Grit action

Queensbury Boxing League - Golden Gloves ready for True Grit action

Jack Figg speaks to Golden Gloves Boxing Academy owner Sam Holloway to discuss his boxers in action on the 'True Grit' bill.

Golden Gloves Boxing Academy head trainer Sam Holloway gives QBL an insight to the promising names coming out of his Kent gym.

Holloway, a former two-time National middleweight champion retired from in-ring action following a collection of injuries, one needing hand surgery, and he admits to still missing the element of competing.

“I’d rather be fighting still but injuries have put me out” Holloway revealed.

“I’d rather be doing the fighting but this is the next best thing for me and I’m proper enjoying it we’ve got some really good fighters coming out the gym and it’s buzzing. Everyone is bouncing off each other.

“I get just as much enjoyment at the show with the fighters than I did when I was competing.”

Holloway has now established himself as head-trainer and owner of his Ramsgate gym and finds himself busy come June 30 as three boxers from Golden Gloves compete on the ‘True Grit’ bill.

Super-bantamweight Chloe Usher takes on Like2Box fighter Anna Beck, light-middleweight Charlie Connell meets Naphtali Lambert and promising lightweight Joe Roswell faces Danny Newth, while heavyweight Paul Watts returns against Roman Ship.

Roswell, aged just 18 is a former Haringey Box Cup winner and the former high level amatuer has been tipped to go all the way by his trainer.

“He’s seriously something special this kid, he will go straight to the top without a shadow of a doubt” Holloway said.

“I’ve known Joe for so long know, he has trained alongside me since maybe eight nine years old and he went off and did his own thing in the amateurs and did really well winning the Haringey Box Cup.

“He’s only young and he’s fresh enough to still achieve and do everything he needs to do in the boxing game.”

Holloway continued the praise for his boxers as he revealed Connell is an improved boxer with an ‘exciting style’.

“Charlie is the most improved fighter in the gym” Holloways said.

“He’s tough as anything and he just doesn't stop coming at you. He’s got a really awkward style and you look at him from outside the ring and he doesn't look great but when you're in there with him he’s hard to figure out, he’s got an exciting style.”

As Usher takes on Beck, Holloway will encounter an experienced Like2Box team, however the trainer has been left pleased with his boxers improvement in the gym.

“We’ve taken Chloe right back to basics and basically started her from scratch again” Holloway said.

“We’ve been working on loads of technical bits and tightening up her defence and she’s working on her angles and I’m really pleased with her she’s looking really good.”

Watts returns to action having suffered a stoppage loss to Carl Kinslow, however Holloway believes his fighter is improving all the time and not far off a title shot.

“Paul's one of those fighters that will get in there with any one and is improving all the time” said Holloway.

“I've spoken to Ross about it and hoping when he gets this win in his next fight hopefully get him matched up with the novice heavyweight champ Steve Willis which I think could be a cracker.”

As Holloway experienced a successful run in the league as a fighter, the trainer expressed the importance of the relationship he has with QBL owners Alan Foley and Ross Minter.

“I know Ross and Alan really well, I’ve known them for years now through boxing on all the shows and that’s a massive thing for me and it helps with the fighters because I know they will be matched evenly and fairly.

“I’ve got a bit of experience with the league and that helps out with the boxers nervous and calmes them a bit.”
