Queensbury Boxing League - I'll Win Local Bragging Rights Warns Darvill

Queensbury national welterweight contender Iain Darvill says he cannot wait to claim local bragging rights as well as a shot at the national title when he faces fellow Kingstonian Tony Ayinde on July 1st at Epsom Downs Racecourse.

The 31-year old delivery driver, who along with brother Michael has become a popular fixture in league competition over the past 12 months, is seeking to gain a second shot at national honours having failed to win the light-welterweight title last season.

And Darvill believes a recent change in his training regime will reap rewards on a show billed as ‘All Fired Up’.

“I’ve been with the Like 2 Box Gym in Redhill since December and I’m very proud to represent them – I love this team.

“Training for this fight started three months ago and it’s been going brilliant. After my last win against Tony Clemmey, it’s stepped up massively and I’ve overwhelmed myself with pain, grit and tears.

“I believe I’ve got this. I’ve been sparring with professional boxer Max Wicks as well as the gym’s other Queensbury boxers, and I’m very confident.

“Ayinde is an awkward southpaw and he’s been on a good unbeaten run in the League, so I don’t underestimate him. I know this will not be easy, but I hope my amateur experience from my days at Foley ABC will shine through.”

While acknowledging the strengths of the returning Ayinde and his trainers at Two Kings Gym, Darvill expects to have his hand raised on the night.

“I respect all boxers, especially ones from my hometown. Anything can happen in the ring so let’s see who’s put the work in.

“I like Ayinde, he’s a good guy. I can see it being like a chess match – and I’ll checkmate him!”

Darvill versus Ayinde is just one of a number of sensational matches on July 1st at Epsom Downs Racecourse. For more information visit www.queensburyboxing.co.uk or call the QBL Hotline on 0203 7518599.
