Queensbury Boxing League - Laming ready to produce fireworks in first defence

Stuart Laming says he is determined to cement his position as Cruiserweight champion next Saturday night when he makes the first defence of his title against Matt Hilliker.

Laming turned in a gutsy performance last time out to capture the Queensbury Novice Cruiserweight title from champion Andreas Devall, which was even more admirable given Devall had defeated him in their first encounter via a stunning first round stoppage in February.

The 36-year old builder admits the scars of that first battle took time to heal, but that coming into this fight he is more than ready to face whatever Hilliker brings.

“The first fight I had with Devall was devastating for me, I had worked so hard and was in great shape, but I got caught with my hands low, right on the temple, and never recovered. I'm afraid that is boxing, and taking nothing away from Andreas”

“After the fight, it was hard to get my head straight again as I gave it my all in training and it ended like it did. I stayed strong in my head and soon got back to work to get ready for the rematch. I came back and faced my demons of the first fight and stopped him in round 3 to claim the title.”

Laming insists he is leaving no stone unturned as he prepares for his tough defence against former title challenger Hilliker.

“Training is going well. I'm fit and strong and have worked very hard. I'm always pushing myself, wanting more. I've travelled a fair bit to various gyms to get different styles of sparring, and prepared for everything.

“I know very little about my challenger Matt Hilliker. I know he's been on the circuit for a while, he is very strong and fit and is very keen to get this title. He probably thinks it's going to be any easy night’s work for him, but I've worked hard and know I can cause him problems, I have a big heart and will to carry on, no matter what.”

“My prediction for the night is: fireworks! We both really want it, we’re both going there to fight, but I'm not going there to lose. The crowd will be in for a great fight!”

Laming versus Hilliker is a feature attraction at the Queensbury Boxing League’s 2017 season finale at the Copthorne Hotel Effingham Park next Saturday night. More details can be found at www.queensburyboxing.co.uk
