Queensbury Boxing League - Larkin set for title action in only his second league contest

Dorking boxer Andrew Larkin will challenge for the vacant Novice welterweight title, on Saturday October 20.

Larkin will take on Naphtali Lambert for the strap on the ‘Road to Glory’ undercard, staged at the Effingham Park Hotel in Crawley.

Although Larkin had competed in six amatuer bouts before joining the QBL, the Dorking man has only had one fight on the league, and will challenge for his first title in just his second contest.

Despite his reasonably inexperienced record, Larkin cited the opportunity to fight for a title could not be turned down.

“I didn’t expect it so early after one fight,” Larkin admitted.

“I didn’t have a massive amateur career, so I didn’t expect it but it’s a big opportunity and you have to take it.

“I may not be ready, you never know, but if you get given an opportunity like this you have to take it when it comes along.

“I’m going to grab this with both hands and throw everything into it. It’s a tough ask, a big ask for me, but I think I’m good enough on my day.”

Lakin revealed he is aware of the threat his opponent Lambert poses, and claimed he will be ‘100 percent’ on his game come fight night.

“We know he’s good, we know he starts fast and he’s had a good amateur career." he said.

"He’s had a good run of wins in the league so it’s a good matchup and it will definitely be a good fight.

“He’s good, I’ve heard from a lot of people that if I’m not at my best I’ll be in trouble but I’m going to bring my best and perform at 100 percent.”

Larkin last competed on the ‘True Grit’ bill, where he defeated Noble Dominic in front of a mass support, and the 33 year-old is hoping to bring the same level of support again in what is a ‘big moment’ in his career.

“It’s a big, big moment for me,” Larkin said.

“It would be lovely to win the belt and keep the winning streak going and hopefully defend the belt. I want to keep learning and always move forward. But I take it all at one step at a time.”
