Nugent preparing for first title shot on October 20

Queensbury Boxing League - Nugent preparing for first title shot on October 20

JACK FIGG

Crawley boxer Niall Nugent will challenge for the vacant Novice light-middleweight title on Saturday, October 20.

Nugent, who trains out of the Like2Box gym in Redhill, will take on Tommy White at the Millennium Arena in West Sussex, where he will challenge for his first title.

The 21 year old has won three fights consecutively, since he lost his league debut against Langdon Cooper, but Nugent stated the loss only inspired him to work harder in the gym.

“My first fight in the league I took a loss and that just made me hungrier to come back and prove a point,” Nugent said.

“Since then I’ve been training so hard ever since. It’s mental for me as a year and a half ago I was in the crowd at a Queensbury show with my old man just wishing to fight in the league, and now I’m at the stage where I’m fighting for a title so it means a lot to me, it’s a big thing.

“It’s only a Novice title so I think it’s perfect for me, we’ve had some good fights on the way towards it, I’ve learnt a lot.”

White is a familiar name for the Like2Box gym, as Nugent’s stablemate Lee Cannon holds a win over the light-middleweight.

Nugent believes having a training partner with experience in sharing the ring with his opponent is a huge factor going into the contest, but admitted White would have improved since that last fight.

“One of my stablemates Lee Cannon, has fought him before so we have a bit of an idea about him,” Nugent said.

“We’re starting to build a gameplan to do the right things for the fight, we have a good team here.

“He’s shared the ring with him before so he’s been there and done it, obviously Tommy has improved since, but it’s a good start.”

Nugent cited if he is successful on October 20, the Crawley man will target future title shots.

He said: “Ideally I’d like to work my way up and get all the belts, I’m not looking to fight anyone in particular as of yet, it will be down to (trainer) Jumbo and (promoters) Ross (Minter) and Alan (Foley) to make sure we’re doing all the right things.

Nugent's title shot will take place on the leagues packed "Road To Glory" promotion taking place at the Copthorne Millennium arena in Sussex on October 20th.
