Grays middleweight Tey Lynn-Jones has warned that the best is yet to come after a sensational triple-performance to land the inaugrual Reisser Quest Knockout Tournament on Saturday.
The league's eight-man tournament at the Copthorne Hotel Effingham Park, featured some of the biggest stars in the competitions middleweight division, but the 21 year-old beat the best to win the prestigious Quest belt, including undefeated multi-weight champion Gareth Gardner.
Speaking afterwards, Lynn-Jones explained that the format suited him. “I relaxed more as the night wore on. I felt properly warmed up by the final.
“My first opponent, Joel Wanderema, was stronger than he looked and he hit me with some hard shots. My trainer kept telling me to use my boxing but the thing about me is I always go looking for a tear-up.”
Lynn-Jones’s semi-final opponent was former undefeated National Champion Kieran Leinster, and in a breath-taking slugfest, the Grays man proved the stronger.
“Again, I just wanted to go after him. I take my hat off to him as when I knocked him down in the second round I thought he was gone.”
While some shrewd observers were tipping Lynn-Jones to reach the final, few outside his army of supporters at the Copthorne Hotel were confident of him beating the formidable Gardner. However, in an astonishing contest, Lynn-Jones took the action straight to his more experienced opponent and looked impressive in a frenetic opener.
“By the final I was doing what my trainer was telling me to do, throwing correct straight shots and mixing in uppercuts. Because I was doing the right things it made it look easier than it actually was.
“The atmosphere was incredible from first fight to last. Every single person in the arena was cheering and shouting. I loved the whole experience.”
“I’ll take a couple of days off then get back in the gym for some sparring. I’ll have a nice break over Christmas but then I can’t wait to get back in the gym in the New Year and take 2016 by storm!”
