Weaver ready for Ghanaian title test

Queensbury Boxing League - Weaver ready for Ghanaian title test

Commonwealth gold medal winner Iain Weaver believes victory in this Saturday nights international title fight against Ghanaian Michael Pappoe will pave the way for huge fights in 2018.

Weaver will enter the toughest fight of his professional career off the back of two impressive victories in his last couple of outings, and the former amateur standout believes Pappoe will prove to be a worthy challenger for the Masters lightweight crown.

The Ghanaian brings an impressive record to the contest with 17 of his 18 wins coming by knockout, and Weaver understands the risks he will face.

“Pappoe is strong, tough and has proved he can bang with all but one of his wins coming by way of knockout, said the Ferndown stylist.

“ I know that he’s coming over here believing he’s going to take my head off, so from that opening bell I need to stamp my authority on this fight and let him know he’s not the only one that can punch”

Weaver’s stop start pro career finally seems to be gaining momentum after having to endure years of frustration trying to secure regular fights, and the former GB elite squad member feels he is finally getting back to the form that saw him win numerous medals in the amateur ranks.

“Training for this fight could not have gone better and I’m feeling sharper than ever, continued Weaver.

“ I’ve been sparring world champion Jorge Linares in preparation for Pappoe and you can’t buy that kind of experience”

“ With Pappoe I need to start fast and land my punches to give him something to think about in there, and I truly believe I’ve got the ability to beat anyone in this division on my day”

“ I’m going in there expecting to go the distance and be involved in a really hard fight, but I also know if I catch him on the chin he might not hear the final bell”

Weaver’s showdown against Pappoe for the International Masters lightweight title sanctioned by the BDF will feature on the Queensbury professional boxing league’s “Unbreakable” promotion this Saturday night at the Copthorne Effingham Park Hotel in West Sussex.
